The Four C’s of Mental Toughness

Building mental strength is fundamental to showing up each day in life as the best version of yourself. Just as we go to the gym and lift weights in order to build our physical muscles, we must also develop our mental health through the use of mindfulness, meditation, and other mental tools and techniques.

Mental Toughness is the ability to stay strong in the face of adversity; to keep your focus and determination no matter what challenges or difficulties you may be facing. A mentally tough individual sees challenge and adversity as an opportunity and not a threat, and has the confidence and positive perspective to take whatever comes their way.

Here are the Four C’s of Mental Toughness to help build strength in your own mental world:

1. Control

Whether you believe it or not, YOU are completely in control of your life, this includes your attitude, perspective, emotions and the decision of how you choose to show up each day. This has so much to do with your self-esteem!  If you feel comfortable in your own skin and have a good sense of who you are, you are in control of your life. Somebody with solid mental toughness can control their emotions, and be able to control their internal response to what’s happening outside of them. In addition, they don’t give their power away to other people’s reactions and emotions. This is all about controlling what you can control and letting go of what you can’t.

2. Commitment

This is the extent of your ability to stay in the practices that keep your mind in the right place. Setting life goals and then creating a system of “process goals” that are done each day to achieve those bigger goals is the pathway to a stronger mind. People that follow through, ignore distractions, trust the process, and find joy in that process are high on commitment.

3. Challenge

Getting out of your comfort zone and learning to find comfort in the discomfort is an ideal exercise for the mind.  When you can see challenges, change, and adversity as opportunities rather than threats, you train your mind to be resilient.  Fear of failure is what keeps so many people in their comfort zone, which ultimately stops them from evolving into the highest version of themselves.

4. Confidence

The most self-confident people in the world are the ones who keep the promises they make to themselves. Each time you back up the things you say you’re going to do for yourself, you are building up your self-confidence and your self-belief, and this makes you unstoppable. Because when you believe in yourself, you believe you can influence others, which is how we create a positive ripple effect to change the world. Somebody with strong self-confidence sees all situations (good and bad) as opportunities to grow. Confident people also see humility as a sign of strength and not weakness.

There will always be tough and challenging moments in our life that will require grit, courage, toughness and resiliency….but for almost all of the circumstances in life, mental toughness really comes down to being more consistent than most people!
